Founded in 1901 on the shores of the Rio de La Plata in Buenos Aires, River Plate’s fame and success extends well beyond the borders of Argentina to encompass the rest of South America and in fact the world. The club has an illustrious history including 32 Argentinean League Championships and 2 Copa Libertadores. Its rivalry with other Primera División super power, Boca Juniors, is legendary and the Superclásico derby is one of the most spectacular showcases of football passion anywhere in the world. Manager: Daniel Passarella

Passarella has a football legacy almost as dynamic as River Plate itself. As a player, he was a solid defender and an inspired captain playing for River Plate and a handful of top European teams. Between 1974 and 1986, he was a stalwart in the Argentinean National side, leading it to World Cup glory in 1978. He coached River Plate from 1989 to 1994 where he enjoyed substantial success and headed the National squad for the following four years. Brief stints managing Uruguay, Parma, Monterrey and Corinthians never amounted to much and he rejoined River Plate in 2006.

Stadium: El Monumental

El Monumental is the home of Argentina’s most celebrated football club and is the country’s national stadium. The ground has a capacity of over 65,000 and was the venue for both the opening and final matches of the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Argentina famously won the Cup, defeating the Netherlands 3-1.

River Plate - 2007/2008 Season

River Plate has been going through a tough time of late, with doubts surrounding many of its top players and Coach Daniel Passarella. In the sides favour, it has dominated the last several meetings against arch rivals Boca Juniors winning the most recent encounter 2-0. The team is also fairing well in the Copa Sudamericana competition.
