Established in 1898, the Italian Serie A is Italy's top level of football competition and one of the most competitive leagues in the world. It is home to Europe's most successful clubs including AC Milan, Juventus and Inter. Serie A teams have won the Champions League on eleven occasions out of twenty-five contested finals (a league record) and footballers playing in the Serie A have been awarded the prestigious Golden Ball (Ballon d'Or) player performance accolade more than in any other league. Annually from August to May, twenty teams compete in a round-robin competition in which they play each other twice (home and away). The season is divided into two halves – the Andata and the Ritorno.

2007/2008 Italian Serie A

After making a few key signings, Inter are the favourites to repeat last season's Serie A success. League giants Juventus are back in the top tier of competition after spending a season in the Serie B, the club has strong line-up of players and could be a serious contender this season. AC Milan has failed to make any significant off-season acquisitions and the club could struggle to make an impact. Roma are an outside chance worth keeping an eye on, the team is playing solid football and they could be the surprise package of the season. Udinese is another club that should advance its previous season performance and at least finish in the top eight.

Coppa Italia

Created in 1922, the Coppa Italia is Italy’s biggest annual cup competition. Teams from both the Serie A and Serie B compete in a three phase tournament which culminates in a single leg final. The winning club gains entry into the UEFA Cup in the following season. In contrast to the rest of Europe where annual cup competitions attract tremendous interest, both Italian teams and fans regard it to be of only minor significance. The winner of the Coppa Italia and the Serie A champions contest the Supercoppa Italiana - played at the start of each new season as an inauguration match.
