With an impressive record of 14 Primera División championships, 7 Copa Libertadores trophies and 15 International titles (matched only by AC Milan, Real Madrid and exceeded by Boca Juniors), Independiente is Argentina’s third most successful football club of all time. The team is affectionately nicknamed "los Diablos Rojos" (the Red Devils) and "Rey de Copas" (King of Cups) due to its red kit and exceptional accomplishments. The club’s greatest period of success was in the 70’s when it won a total of 12 local and international accolades. In recent times its performance has been marred by financial turmoil. Manager: Pedro Troglio

As a footballer Troglio played for some of the world’s biggest clubs including River Plate, Verona and Lazio. He also made 21 appearances for the Argentinean national team. During his career as a manager he has coached a handful of teams with mixed success. Most noteworthy was his stint at Gimnasia where he saved the club from relegation and led it to finish second in the 2005 Apertura. He joined Independiente in 2007.

Stadium: Estadio Libertadores de América

Independiente’s home ground is the Estadio Libertadores de América. Completed in 1928, the La Doble Visera de Cemento (The double cement eyeshade), as it is known by fans, was the first stadium to be constructed from cement. It can seat over 52,000 people and is the fourth largest stadium in the country. The facility is currently undergoing substantial renovations.

Independiente - 2007/2008 Season

Under the leadership of new coach Pedro Troglio, Independiente has regained some form and is a serious challenger to win the 2007 Apertura tournament. With four games to go, the club is currently sitting third on the log, four points adrift from leaders Lanús and just one behind Boca Juniors. This after holding the top spot for several weeks and displaying some of the best football its fans have seen in a long time. It seems Independiente is on the rise and the team could be a competitive force in 2008.
