Greek National Football Team

The Greek national football team is most famous for accomplishing one of the greatest upsets in football history – coming from nowhere to win the Euro 2004 tournament. On the road to victory the Greek team stunned the world by knocking out France in the quarter-finals and defeating the host nation Portugal twice (in the opening game and in the final). The victory was one of the greatest ever achieved by a Greek sports team. Since Euro 2004 the squad has struggled to replicate its phenomenal performance, crashing out of the 2005 Confederation Cup in the first round and failing to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In contrast, the Greek squad qualified for Euro 2008 with 31 points – more than any other nation. Football Betting

Manager: Otto Rehhagel

Rehhagel is a highly successful German manager and ex-player. During his managerial career he has led sides such as FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and SV Werder Bremen. As a coach and player, he is the only individual to ever compete in over 1000 Bundesliga matches and his nickname is "Child of the Bundesliga". He joined the Greek national team in 2001 and was instrumental in its surprise victory in the 2004 European Championship finals, as well as qualification for the Euro 2008 finals.

Stadium: Karaiskákis Stadium

The Karaiskákis Stadium was built in 1895 and has since been reconstructed twice, including a total overhaul in preparation to host the 2004 Athens Olympic Games Football Tournament. The Greek national football team shares the facility with Olympiacos – one of Greece's best local football clubs. The ground has a capacity of over 33,000 and is a UEFA 4-star rated facility.

Euro 2008 Preview

The Greek team was impressive in qualifying, topping Group C with a tally of 31 points and securing its place in the Euro 2008 Finals with two games to spare. For the Finals, its Group D draw pools the defending champions with Russia, Spain and Sweden. Russia was the only side to beat Greece in the 2004 finals, but form indicates that Spain and Sweden will pose the greatest threat to Greece's campaign. "The Pirate Ship's" (the Greek national football teams nickname earned at Euro 2004) triumph in the Euro 2004 tournament took the world by surprise and a repeat at Euro 2008 would be even more startling.
