What is a Single Table Tournament (STT)?

The opposite of Multi Table Tournaments, the fast-paced and high action dynamic of Single Table Tournaments (also known as Sit n' Go Tournaments) make the format an ultra-popular choice for poker players worldwide. Registration is similar to a ring game, except the tournament will only begin once the table is full. Each player is given an equal number of chips, and play continues until a single player has all the chips. Prize structures vary from game to game.

While the prize pools are usually greater, Multi Table Tournaments (MTT's) require a massive time investment and there's nothing more frustrating than busting out on the bubble. STT's offer an enjoyable "time friendly" alternative which, combined with the right tactics, can lead to steady and continuous gains.

Land-based STT events are held over a number of rounds, giving players multiple chances to earn points. The players who accumulate the most points then qualify to play at the final table – and for their share of the money.

Single Table Tournament Strategy Tips
  • Be aware that each blind level requires an adjustment to your strategy, use the early levels (lower blinds) to observe your opponents and build up your chip stack for when the blinds get heavy.
  • Levels 1-3: Don't get involved. Play tight, avoid bluffing and only play premium hands – this will give you an edge over the weaker players at the table, who will no doubt be in the thick of the action with inferior, vulnerable, hands.
  • Levels 4-5: It's all about skill. At this stage there is very little room for error. With blinds now biting chunks out of your stack – every hand counts, so only play premium hands and play them aggressively even if you have to bluff. Take note of your position, keep an eye out for limpers, seek opportunities to steal the blinds, defend your blinds where possible, and most importantly DON'T GO ON TILT.
  • Level 6+: Heads up. This is the fun part – aggression, trapping and sneaky plays. This is where you can outsmart your opponent simply by being observant and taking crucial factors into account: stack sizes, playing styles and skill levels. Know your opponent, know yourself and adjust your tactics accordingly.
